GETTING STARTED ====================================================================== - There are two help systems related to the PNA application. The first one is TME Help which provides general information on installing and operating the test software in TME. The other one is PNA Help. It provides information specific to testing the PNA. - To view the TME Help when running the test software, select Help from the top menu bar then Contents. The TME Help Getting Started section will help with installation options as well as details of how to configure TME to begin testing. - To view the PNA Help when running the test software, select the "Help" button under the "Run Tests" tab. The PNA Help Getting Started will give installation and configuration instructions that are unique to this application. Also included are the details and test equipment needed to run each of the performance tests. ====================================================================== 5. RUNNING THE SOFTWARE ====================================================================== - Launch the Keysight N7800A Test Management Environment (TME) from the Start menu -> Programs -> Keysight Test Management Environment (OR) - Launch the Keysight N7800A Test Management Environment from the Keysight N7800A Test Management Environment shortcut on the Desktop. - Follow the instructions from the "Getting Started" section of the Keysight N7840A PNA-Series Network Analyzer Calibration Application Help to run the software. ====================================================================== 6. USAGE NOTES ====================================================================== * LICENSING - This application requires an instrument specific license to run any performance verification test and to view test reports. Contact Keysight Technologies to purchase a license specific to your instruments. See also the TME Help system for details on how to install and manage these licenses within TME. * INTERNATIONAL USE - This application has limited support for country specific locale. Localization affects only the format of numbers and dates and times. Refer to the TME Readme.txt for locale configuration instructions. * PNA Firmware Revision Level Requirement - For the required PNA firmware revision for each PNA model, please see detail at http://na.support.keysight.com/pna/firmware/firmware.html - If necessary, the PNA may be temporarily upgraded for testing purposes, then downgraded to a revision level required by the user. Downgrades should be kept within a major revision level. For instance, if the desired final firmware revision for a PNA is A.02.23, then the PNA should be tested at A.02.62 and then downgraded to A.02.23. It should not be tested with firmware revision A.03.53 or A.04.25. * Perform PNA Operator's Check before returning PNA to user It is strongly recommended that the PNA Operator's Check be performed before returning the instrument to a user. This provides a basic functional check to make sure that nothing has "broken" unexpectedly. * PNA Service Guides Service Guides provide PNA troubleshooting information. Copies of the Service Guides in pdf format are available on the CDROM that was shipped with the PNA and also at www.keysight.com. Search for your PNA model number and look at its library items. * General Hints - PNA screen going white (blank) during testing The PNA has a "Turn Monitor off" function under the Windows screen saver. It doesn't make any sense to enable this function because the PNA has an LCD. If the PNA screen goes white (blank) during testing, check this function first. (Hitting a key on the front panel of the PNA does NOT un-blank the screen. You must use the external keyboard or mouse.) - Serious problems with printed graphs If the graphs look good on the PC screen but have serious offset and/or line type problems when printed then check the setup for the printer driver under Windows. Use the normal Windows functions to access the printer's properties. If there is an option for "vector graphics" or "raster graphics" mode, select the raster mode. - Time-out on power sensor calibrations At the beginning of a test that uses power sensors, the software checks to see if the power sensors have been calibrated recently. If recalibration of a power sensor is necessary, the software will prompt the user to do the calibration. But if a test operator takes a long pause during a test, the power sensor calibration may become invalid. When a test operator pauses for more than 30 minutes during a test, the operator should consider calibrating the power sensors before continuing with the test. (It is recommended that long pauses not be taken during tests that use power meters.) (See the list of software defects for additional related information.) - Assembling the V8486A power sensor and the V281A adapter, see more details in N7840A help - PNA firmware revision shown on test reports The PNA firmware revision indicated on the test report indicates the firmware revision level of the PNA at the time the TME "Order Number" was created. If the PNA firmware is upgraded during testing, the change will not be reflected in the test report. - Upgraded N7840A test software and existing orders When the N7840A test software is upgraded to a new revision, no further testing should be performed on existing orders. New orders must be opened for tests performed following the upgrade. ====================================================================== 7. KNOWN ISSUES ====================================================================== - Sometimes equipment on the equipment list for a given test is not actually required for the test - TME is not able to modify the equipment required for a test based on other equipment used for the test. For instance, a microwave counter requires a different set of adapters than an RF counter. In this case the equipment list just gives all possible adapters. - If a PNA fails the frequency accuracy test at only a couple of points and a 5315xA microwave counter is being used, here is a possible work-around. - Before running the frequency accuracy test, check the "Pause on test point failure" box. Execute the test. If the test pauses, manually reset the counter by hitting the Reset/Local button twice, then continue the test. (This work-around does not cause erroneous readings. It compensates for a test software problem where the counter takes a reading before the signal is settled.) - Test software will not function with Power Meter - Power meters with firmware revision A2.03.00 (and possibly A1.03.00) will not function properly with the test software. If you have a power meter with A2.03.00 then you must upgrade to A2.08.01 or later version. - N model Power Sensor - If an N model power sensor is being used, the power meter firmware must be A2.09.01 or later (for E4419B), or A.05.02 or later (for N1912). - SCPI command error - If the test software reports any type of "SCPI command" error, re-run the test. The error is most likely caused by a problem in the PNA firmware. - Attempt to view a test report generates a message containing "Not Supported" - This type of error message shows up in a window titled "Crystal Reports Viewer." The work-around is to close down the TME and start it up again. No data will be lost. - Problem recognizing serial number over GPIB - Generally, alpha characters in test equipment serial numbers may be entered as upper or lower case. But for some instruments, upper case is required. - Restrictions on names for orders - In TME, an "order name" should not contain characters that may not be used in Windows file names. Generally avoid special characters except for dashes and underscores. - CC test will not complete successfully - If a Calibration Coefficients tests aborts unexpectedly, it may be due to a memory leak in the PNA firmware. Exit the PNA application, then restart it after waiting about ten seconds. (This is not an N7840A defect, but is included here for reference.) - Parts in place of cal kit - The "PartsInPlaceofCalKit" equipment item has not been implemented for the sub-67 GHz PNAs as it has been for the 67 GHz PNA. - Possible problem with "as received" testing - The performance tests were designed to be run after the PNA passes the pre-test to insure that basic PNA performance problems are corrected before performing the full set of tests. Some customers require an "as received" set of tests to be performed before changing the PNA in any way. There is some conflict between these two requirements. ====================================================================== 8.
